SHOU is not actually a Chinese character, but an ideogram symbolizing the wish for a long and prosperous life. This imperial emblem was believed to protect the Chinese emperors from misfortune, and is still widely used today as a decorative pattern in a range of design fields: architecture, fashion, handicrafts, and jewelry. There are hundreds of versions of SHOU symbols; the one featured in our jewelry can be found in the Forbidden City in the Empress Dowager’s private room – carved in jade and attached to the wooden ceiling. ‘Purified’ and set in a modern context, the symbol exudes its powerful appeal for longevity with all the more intensity.
